How can you tell the difference between ductile iron and cast iron and regular iron?

I am taking a welding class at Great Onyx job corps and my instructor could not actually explain how to tell the difference i know that they are used for different purposes but you cant weld on ductile iron and I would like to know how to tell if something is ductile, cast, or regular iron. please answer A.S.A.P... thank you
